Gillian McClure illustration has been highly acclaimed in the UK and abroad. Her style has evolved from her first bold ink-sprayed books of 1970s to her much more detailed books of the 1980s and 1990s. These were painted in acrylic using glazes to build up jewel-like colours. Her more recent books are painted in water colour and have a fluid line done with a dipping pen and ink.
There is humour as well as sensitivity in her human and animal characters. She spends many hours at the dummy stage working at a light box developing a character or working on a page layout. She shows these dummy roughs in school workshops and talks.
Gillian loves to sketch and these often become the setting for her stories. You can see some of her Korean sketches in the introduction to The Land of the Dragon King and Other Korean Stories.
Gillian’s illustrations have been exhibited in the Barbican, in The WOWLIC World Women’s Literature Center Seoul South Korea, in “Picture This!” Picture Book Art of the Millenium at the Fitzwilliam Museum, in Cover to Cover- the art of the Book Illustrator at The Grapevine Gallery Norwich, in The Forge Gallery West Sussex and in Drawn Here: Children’s Book Illustration from sketch to finished page at Ipswich.
